My tips for engine overhauling


I am a mechanic by profession and I love doing engine modification. There are a lot of techniques in dealing with the car engines most specially when you are performing engine overhauling. What if you will perform to cars which you do not know its engine specifications like old model engines. It is so simple. I will share to you my formula in getting the figures of the end ring gaps and clearances namely the first and second compression rings and the oil rings. This is the formula :


for piston ring end gap clearance:

diameter of piston in inches x .003 for compression ring

diameter of piston ring in inches x .002 for oil ring


For piston to cylinder wall clearance:

aluminum piston diameter in inches x .001.


Connecting rod journal and main journal bearing clearances;

diameter of the journal in inches x .001


for spark plug gap clearance:

.020 inches to .040 inches


Valve tappet clearance:

intake is usually from .006" to .016"

exhaust is usually from .008" to .016"


Cylinder head warpage should not exceed .020 in, in it full lenght, otherwise it should be resurfaced or replaced.


This is the correct formula try it it really corresponds in all engine modification even if you compare it with its car engine manual. It is applicable to all car models and even trucks as long as it has a combustion chamber and compression rings.
